Fishery Report: Week Ending: 19th July 2020

Monday and following the brighter weekends weather our water temperature had climbed to 19c although the days forecast for cloud and a breeze would help to reduce the temperature. Overall a tough day with a rod average of 1.5

Tuesday, more cloud and a good breeze with our water temperature getting closer to 18c. A much better day with trout in the top layers taking buzzers, crunchers, snatchers. The cooler morning session fished best. Tim Whiting & P Cox manged 4 apiece on buzzers but the star of the day was Thornton member Howard Davies fishing his home tied snatcher patterns to record 17 trout for his mornings session, with Howard picking up fish all around the main basin.

Wednesday the main basin fished best gain to floating lines buzzers and the traditional Bibio size 12 working well. J Considine caught 6 for his mornings visit, Richard Maycock headed for the stones and caught 5, Mick Hewitt arrived late morning and fished into the early evening reporting plenty of follows and takes to a Bibio managing to land 7 trout. P Wurm decided to try the late evening, armed with the information regarding the Bibio he went on to catch 5 trout between 6.00pm & 9pm, best late evening session we have had for a while.

Thursday a warmer day switched the fish off, Mick Huffer caught 5 for his mornings visit with Robert Moreton taking 4 on a booby fished deep with few fish moving during the evening session

Rod average 3.1 saw an improvement to the sport on Friday with anglers finding a fast sinking line short leader and boobies caught well with Malcolm Beck catching 11 for his mornings visit with John Bebbington and Keith Coley also fishing boobies deep boating 7 for their part day session. D Coote opted for a sink tip long leader with a weighted damsel on the point and buzzers on the dropper fished static catching 6 for his mornings sport.

Saturday anglers took our advice and fished sinking lines with boobies and fabs returning a rod average of 6.0 for the day. Bob Jones took to his float tube fishing boobies and orange fab to catch 7, Martin Clay caught 12 for his mornings visit with Alison and Brian Sibley catching 8 with two over 3lb

Sunday with our water temperature at 19.5c at 7.30 it was always going to be a day for fishing deep. Anglers who reached for their fast sinking lines with booby patterns on a short 6ft leader although a few anglers who persevered with a floating line & long 20ft+ leaders did have some success with damsels & buzzers. S Swinfield & S Zeleny shared a boat & fished fast sinkers & Boobies to catch 8 for their mornings visit, A Wilson also fished boobies for his 5 trout, D Skudder fished a damsel pattern catching 5 trout during his mornings visit. Pete Hunt & John Thompson opted to fish a floater with a long 20ft+ leader with damsel & buzzers catching 13 trout for their mornings visit.

With the weekly rod average at 2.7 the morning session has generally fished best especially as the week progressed with the brighter warmer conditions.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 12th July 2020

Very Windy start to the week with only two rods out on Monday, bit of an improvement on Tuesday but still gusty at times with rain later on in the day. Jamie Scott fished a long leader and single dries to take his 7 trout fishing cdc patterns from the dam across to the stones, Mr Ingley and partner caught 7 for their mornings visit. The morning session fished best with a rod average 2.7 for the day.

Wednesday and the breezy conditions continued R Price went for a fast sinking line and minkie booby for his morning visit to catch 4 with Howard Davies tying a green and black snatcher to catch his 3 fish again during the morning session.

Thursday and an improvement to the weather, P Cross & S Windram fished a morning session with sinking lines and orange boobies to catch 12.

By Friday it was clear sinking lines had the edge with anglers starting to find good numbers of trout in the Thornton arm in front of the lodge with John Bebbington & Keith Cowley catching 7 for their short 4 hour visit. M Cross went across and fished the stones and green bay area catching 3 for his visit. A Stewart fished traditional wet flies o catch his 4 trout with All Water member P Walker catching 6 on diawls

Saturday and following the reports of fish in the Thornton Arm P Mee and A Lilley concentrated in this area fishing sinking lines with boobies catching 10 with Mr Perkins also taking 5 trout from the same area.

Sunday, bright day with little wind the warmest day of the week. A Stone took our advice and concentrated his fishing to the Thornton arm drifting past the lodge, his sinking line and booby caught 4 fish for his morning session and others missed! Adam Gunby also caught 4 for his mornings visit.

A more difficult week than late with a rod average 2.0  Little bit of algae about on Sunday but any breeze soon moved it

Mornings are still the best time to fish, back drifting although not everyone’s preferred method has been the consistent catching method this week with sinking lines, boobies & snakes.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 5th July 2020

Thornton was built in 1854 and is shallow reservoir by today’s standards, 30ft at its deepest with large areas of shallow water. With no aerators and only fed by two small streams with reduced summer flows It does suffer from the warmer summers with higher water temperatures which can affect us during late June to August. Without doubt our seasons are altering with warmer temperatures during the summer period.

This year during this summer period peak period of higher temperatures were trialling a different stocking policy by stocking triploid trout from 1lb8oz to 1lb14oz. With more anglers wanting catch and release these sized trout will return easier and as I suspect they will be still be catchable in reasonable numbers compared to our regular stock size of 1lb12oz to 2lb+ giving you the anglers the sport and rod average you’ve come to expect.

Anglers are already reporting these fish seem more aggressive, prepared to chase a fly & importantly return easier. Our rod averages for this period are currently higher than previous years.

Late August / September we will return to our usual stocking size of 1lb12oz to 2lb+

Monday and a great start to the week with a rod average 4.5 with the cooler morning session fishing best with green bay, stones, dam and 100yds in front of the wood fishing best. Variety of methods taking fish from anglers back drifting with sinking lines to a washing line with dries and diawl bachs. Ian Brearley found the fish in green bay using a sink tip with snakes & damsel to catch 14, Bob Menhams found surface feeding fish along the bank from the pontoon to the car park catching 4 in 4 hours on a small foam backed daddy with Stuart Thompson commenting “best sport in a long time, fish bow waving behind the flies” catching 5 but missing many more during his mornings visit fishing diawls.

Tuesday another warm day but we still averaged 4.0 with anglers reasonably spread across the water again catching on floaters all the way down to fast sinkers

Richard Price caught 7 for his mornings visit with B Deeley catching his 8 on a DI7 with green & gold humungus. During the morning we were watching fish feeding out in front of the pontoon & to the right, we showed these to Alan Smith who set up with a floating line & traditional Wickham’s & Hare Ear pattern to catch 6 for his 4 hour mornings visit. Bob Jones took to his float tube catching 12 on a washing line combination of a small booby on the point & diawl on the dropper.

Wednesday & a much brighter warmer day resulting in a 2.5 rod average Dave Leavesley caught 6 on a damsel with All Water Member Ged Odonoghue fishing from his tube with diawl & damsel patterns to catch his 6 trout, member D Button found fish feeding on damsel nymphs along the edge of the weed in front of the wood catching 5 for his visit.

Thursday and a rod average 2.6 with the morning session fishing best. P Hunt caught 6 for his mornings visit, Steve Windram caught 5 including an overwintered 3lb8oz rainbow. Ian Leach bought his daughter fishing catching 5 between them for their mornings fishing with Scot Wilson recording 7 for his mornings fishing.

Friday with a fresher wind & overcast conditions & our rod average was 4.1 member M Cross catching 6 for his mornings fishing, Mr Chamberlain fished a Candy Fab, green tadpole & booby to catch his 13 trout with J Batit catching 17 on a green booby, coral booby & Pitsford pea patterns, again the morning session produced best.

Saturday, cooler fresher overcast day with light showers produced another good day with a rod average 4.8 Alison an Brian Sibley caught 11 for their mornings visit fishing out from the corner of the wood with DI3 and damsel patterns, Mark Hunt decided to concentrate on the dries catching 16 trout from all over the water with Big red & black hoppers, again catching the majority during the morning session.

Sunday and a very windy day which saw the anglers who ventured out go looking for the calmer sheltered water, a tough day with a rod average 1

Peter Hunt tucked himself away under the cover of the dam & ended up being top with 3 trout taken on buzzer.

Much better forecast from Tuesday onwards with Thornton enjoying excellent early July sport.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 28 June 2020

Monday and the warmer weather continued although the forecast indicted cooler conditions midweek onwards. Swinfield and Zeleny back drifted to get their snakes and boobies down and it worked catching 7 trout for their visit. Rodger Townsend fished a foam back daddy on the dropper with a weighted fly on the point to pull it just under the surface, a tactic that worked as he went on to catch 4 for his mornings visit, Bob Jones on his first outing of the year float tubed catching 4 on a diawl bach while I Brearley fished a DI8 with blobs and snake to catch 11 trout to 3lb

Tuesday had a rod average 3.5, cooler mornings fished best with the car park, green bay and dam wall best. M Beck caught 6 for his mornings visit, Dave Coote fished a sink tip with olive buzzers catching 7 trout for his short 4 hour morning session, B Doleman fished bloodworm patterns static catching 5 trout for his half day visit with Arthur Olding taking our advice fishing the cooler morning session to catch his 4 trout

Wednesday and the hot spell of weather wasn’t helping the fishing as our surface temperature went to 19cAnglers who fished the cooler morning session caught best with members M Glover catching on a damsel 8ft down with another member P Walker taking his fish on Diawl`s and a gold head. This time of year its important to follow our advice to be successful for example the morning session we recommended angers to fish averaged 3.00 while the hotter afternoon session averaged 0.9

Thursday was a day for sinking lines S Zeleny & S Swinfield caught 10 for their visit fishing the cooler morning session with fast sinking lines, they reported plenty of missed takes. R Moreton caught 4 in the first few hours finishing his morning session with 6. A Miles caught 6 for his mornings visit with P Cross & S Windram catching their 7 trout on DI3 and fast sinking lines, for those prepared to fish fast sinkers on the drift casting out of the side of the boat and allowing the sinking line to sink fully behind the boat a great day despite the weather with a rod average 4.6

Friday following a humid night a bit more of a cooler breeze although our water surface temperature was still high all anglers caught up until midday. S Swinfield & S Zeleny returned for their second outing of the week this time catching 10 trout but reporting lots of pulls and follows. R Moreton caught 6 by midday with P Cross & S Windram catching 7 for their visit.

Saturday and a cooler day, more wind with showers, top rod was J Webber who found the fish off the stones and across the main basin catching 18 on a pink snake and orange fab on a DI5, M Watkins and his son enjoyed their first trip in 2 years and weren’t disappointed catching 11 trout on small orange boobies, tequila boobies and orange headed damsels. Brian Sibley & Alison caught 8 for their mornings visit. Again, the most productive session was the cooler morning.

Sunday cooler wind and heavy showers are all helping to cool the water. Members M Vickers & Simon shared a boat & caught 8 for their mornings visit. J Parrot & partner new to the sport enjoyed their best session yet catching 10 for their mornings visit with most falling to a pink snake. Andrew Wilson decided to fish 100yards off the wood finding a pod of fish willing to take his cats whisker & orange lure catching 14 for his mornings sport.

Rod average for the week was 3.4

Best time to fish was the cooler morning session 8.00am – 3.00pm with intermediate, DI3, DI5 & fast sinkers with snakes, booby, orange Fab or Blob, damsel, size12 diawl bach

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 22 June

Monday and another bright hot day with a 1400 trout delivery from Torre trout farm delivered during the morning. The forecast indicated a rapid change in the weather on its way with heavy rain & thunderstorms. Sport on Monday was generally slow.

Tuesday & a change to the weather cooler with heavy thundery showers. Water temperature dropped to 18c. B Deeley fished a tequila blob on a fast sinker to catch 7 trout, David Pritchard recorded 6 for his visit with the dam wall & deeper water fishing best.

Wednesday the forecast was for substantial rain & localised flooding due to thunderstorms, the few rods who did venture out fished the morning, Alan Johnstone fished a minkie booby deep to take his 4 fish limit with member John Thomson catching 6 on buzzer between 6ft & 10ft down. By teatime the thunderstorm arrive with torrential rain, in just over an hour it put 20 gallons of rain water in each boat with the reservoir rising rapidly, local weather stations reported 48mmwhich is nearly 2inch of rain in a 24 hour period.

Thursday and the water level came up 6inch but thankfully with all the crops in the field our clarity remained fishable. Members Steve Windram & Phil Cross fished orange blobs to catch their 20 trout, Martin Vernon caught 6 with N Brain & M Hunt fishing the afternoon session with Snakes & damsels to record their catch of 7 trout. Member Peter Wurm drifted the main basin during the late evening rise fishing a G&H sedge to boat his 4 trout

Member Greg Weatherdon caught 7 on snakes & blobs, Steve Jordan & Pam Shuttlewood shared a boat fishing boobies & buzzers to catch their 8 trout, Andy Dermott on a day off from his Thornton & Eyebrook duties took a boat out for the morning session catching 14 trout out of green bay with All Water member Jamie Scott fishing a DI7 with blobs & boobies to catch 21 trout . Mark Hunt went out for the last 4hr hoping for some dry fly sport and wasn’t disappointed fishing big reds, cdc he caught 7 trout

Saturday with the water level starting to return to normal and our water temperature 17.5c we were expecting a good days sport, and we weren’t disappointed. Andre Russell & Garry Cragg fished from their float tubes with cormorants, damsels & snakes catching 19 trout, All Water member Tim Davies fished the first half of the morning session without a take, during the second half of his morning session he boated 6 trout. B Perrin decided to fish the washing line with diawl on his dropper, a good choice as he caught 19 trout. Phil Mee also fished diawls to catch his 6 trout. B Sibley caught 9 for his mornings visit with J Kilby fishing buzzers to record his 8 trout. Jan Webber alternated between a booby, fab, snakes & damsel to catch his 9 trout.

Stuart Thompson reported his fish “were stuffed with large bloodworms” while other anglers reporting their catches had been feeding on daphnia or pin fry

Sunday, cooler morning with the water a fishing friendly 17.5 degrees. Most anglers headed towards the green bay, dam & stones with James Edwards enjoying an excellent morning in green bay catching 14 trout on a washing line & sinking with snakes, Dave Skudder caught 5 for his morning visit with Steve Jordan using buzzers & boobies to take his 4 trout

The heavy rainfall & cooler evenings resulted in our water temperature dropping to 17.5c with anglers then catching at all depths from a floating line with dries to a washing line, with a sink 3, sink 5 & fast sinking lines also taking fish with snakes, boobies & damsels resulting in an overall rod average of 3.5 for the week.

Cooler day on Wednesday and surprisingly tougher days fishing from the day before. Member Howard Davies caught 7 for his mornings visit, Neil Nates fished a green pea booby to catch his 4 for his afternoon fishing with Carl Bond taking 4 for his session on an orange blob

Thursday & the surface water temperature was dropping back. Nick Glover caught 6 with every fish feed he caught feeding on daphnia, Alan Johnson fished a morning session for his 4 with Neil Bates returning for another afternoon session with his green pea booby catching a further 4 trout.

Friday and noticeably cooler water temperature had dropped further to 17.5c. Garry Cragg fished from his float tube catching 6 trout, Robert Morton fished a red snake to take his 4 trout during a morning session with Chris Sayer catching 5 trout

Saturday and after another cooler windier evening our water temperature had dropped a further degree to 16.5c Saturday proved to be a cold, wet, hailstone, thunder & wind.

Colin England fished an UV cruncher to take 5 for his mornings visit with Mark Hunt fishing through the worst of the afternoon weather to catch 7 on booby & snakes

Sunday and another cool morning with the water temperature down to 16c degrees I was expecting the fishing to be good, well I was proved wrong, it tuned out to be the most difficult day of the week. Some anglers reported seeing fish feeding especially along the bank of the Thornton arm down to the car park & again off the corner of the wood. J Draycot found a cdc buzzer was the answer.

Preparing for the opening of the lodges 15th June

The government guidelines allow us to have the tackle shops & lodges open at Draycote, Eyebrook & Thornton from June 15th as long as we can manage social distancing.

To give you advance notice on how we will operate from the 15th June onwards ensuring social distance and to ensure as we move forward our operating procedures for this next period run as smoothly as they did for the first, I have outlined below our next steps.

From June 15th Lodges Open

1. Access to the tackle shops will be limited to 2 people at any one time

2. Shops will only be open for tackle sales

3. Hand Sanitiser will be available from a dispenser by the door, you will be required to use it on entry to the lodge/shop

4. Door handles, counters, demo tackle, tills, phones etc will be regularly disinfected

5. To prevent any queuing outside the lodge as were restricting shop customer numbers to 2 at any one time:

  • Fishing permits & boats will be pre booked & pre-paid
  • Your receipt will as it is currently be posted in an envelope on the lodge window
  • Lodges open from 7.30am Do Not congregate outside the lodge door before 7.30am staff when they are ready will call you forward
  • Social distancing guidelines will be observed
  1. Boat usage will remain the same, with restricted availability of boats,
  • Single person occupancy unless your fishing with a person from the same household or two members fishing together
  • Once you have picked up your envelope off the window with your receipt & permit the staff on the pontoon will control numbers ensuring social distancing on the pontoon, they will call you forward when they will allocate you your boat number
