Our COVID-19 Guidelines http://www.flyfishthornton.co.uk/about-us/

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 25th May 2020

Our operating guidelines are working well & Id like to thank our visiting anglers for their patience & understanding as we all get used to the current changes. The lodge remains closed hopefully that will be eased at the next relaxing of lockdown rules.

Click on the COVID-19 guidelines above to see our current rules.

Thornton reopened on Wednesday 20th May in line with government guidelines, our current guidelines can be viewed at our link above.

Working to restricted angler number the fishing as expected was good with the fish been left alone these past 8 weeks.

First day’s rod average was 9.5 before settling down to a steady rod average of 4.5 for the week.

Mixed weather for the first 4 days from perfect overcast & gentle ripple to strong winds with our water temperature at 15c+degrees

Anglers report catching trout from all over the reservoir although the corner of the wood into the Markfield arm & the dam across to green bay & the stones producing best.

Generally floating lines or intermediate with daddies, hoppers, cdc, buzzer, diawl, damsels have all worked well with the sinking line & booby working best during any bright flat calm periods.

All Water Member A Russel & Gary have fished from their float tube generally catching 10+ trout, All Water Member Ged Odonoghue caught 12 for his visit, S Owen & M Cartlidge fished from separate boats for their visit both recording double figure catches. Thornton member Howard Davies recorded the largest fish of the week a 4lb9oz rainbow

We have buzzers, sedges hatching in good numbers with the first of the damsels starting to show & withing the margins we are starting to see the first of the pin fry

Fisheries update 30th March 2020

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Draycote, Eyebrook & Thornton Coronavirus Update 30th March 2020

It’s a week since the trout fisheries closed in line with the government directive, and I will be the first to admit it’s been a bit of a stressful time as we quickly had to prepare the fisheries for the closure.

Anglers were lucky that social media is flooded with fly tying, fishing video & blogs to help us while away the enforced home time.

We will be posting items on our website & social media, if you have any photos or video of your fishing trips to any of our fisheries, if you can share them it would be great, if you can forward them to shop@flyfishstore.co.uk we can add them to our library and post them during the next few weeks

Members, once I know the duration of the lockdown, I will be looking at some form of compensation for the period were closed.

Vouchers purchased will be valid to be used when we reopen later this year & will be valid to be used during 2021 for those who can’t use them this year

Tom Bird is currently preparing one of his excellent blogs with Martin Blakeston putting together a piece on the history of the Blackston buzzer

When up at the fisheries its noticeable that the buzzer hatches are improving with increasing numbers of martins travelling through each day. Spring is here

Thank you for your well wishes, everyone keep safe

Coronavirus, all of our fisheries remain open, with our staff following the advice from the authorities to regularly during the day clean the vulnerable areas, doors, counters, tills, credit card machines, phones etc

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 15th March

Monday to Thursday of this week followed the previous few weeks of low water clarity and few rods on the water.

Friday 13th with a good weather forecast and advise from the lodge that conditions had improved with clarity between 2ft & 3ft enough to warrant a visit the anglers were rewarded with a rod average 4.2

Richard Price caught 6 trout on a green booby while Howard Davies & Jan Webber shared a boat to catch 16 on cats whisker, Dave Slesser caught 7 for his visit while Clive Holt & Colin Chambers shared an afternoon boat to record 10 fish for their visit. The shallows opposite the lodge, wood & lonesome pine fished best.

Saturday & our sport continued to improve with the daily rod average 6.2 with the boats generally enjoying the best of the sport. Phill Mee found the fish up the Thornton arm catching 16 for his visit, Jan Webber returned for his second visit of the week catching 12 wit Mark Hunt fishing a DI3 with a cats whisker to boat his 14 trout. Our surface temperature has increased to 8c+ with anglers reporting increasing buzzer hatches.

Sunday & the poor weather returned, wet & windy with no boats out the few bank anglers who fished struggled with the windy conditions.

Clarity continues to improve and is currently close to 3ft

Good to see the sport picking up & its well worth a visit, contact the Thornton Lodge 01530230807

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 1st March 2020

Another week, another storm! It does look at long last that we may see an improvement in the weather.

A few rods did venture out during the week but conditions were against them

This morning our water level has receded since Thursday / Fridays rainfall with our clarity starting to improve, off the end of the pontoon this morning we have 13inch, I think we need 16inch+ ideal would be 18inch, we could be at that sort of clarity level by Wednesday, Thursday.

The clarity will be at its best from the bank outwards, I would expect the bank to start fishing better than the boats.

Thornton Fishery Update 23rd February

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton 23rd February

Call 01530 230807

Very little to report as we advised anglers to stay away this week due to the high water level from the week before which coloured the water.

Water clarity is improving however we have to wait & see what impact the rain over the weekend has.

From our records you need to go back to 2002 or 2007 to find the last time we had the reservoir effected for so long by rainfall.

Had we not had the weekends rainfall we were looking at the clarity improving by Wednesday, following Sundays rainfall & depending on todays (Monday 24th) rainfall I will have a better idea tomorrow on when its likely to be worth fishing, ideally we need 14inch+ of clarity this morning at 10.00am we have 11 – 12inch of clarity.

My gut feeling looking at the various forecast and current localised rainfall  is that Thursday / Friday could be worth a visit

As always we recommend you call the lodge for latest updates 01530 230807

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 16th February 2020

Monday and its poor weather forecast, strong winds & sleet had us recommending anglers didn’t visit with everyone heeding our advice, Tuesday was the same with no rods out on the water.

Wednesday and conditions looked better with water clarity 12in+ however looks can be deceiving with the rods who fished in Wednesday returning a blank.

Thursday morning and following rain during the early hours the clarity was reduced further, a few members did venture out but with a small rise in the reservoir level which reduced the clarity further we took the decision to advise anglers not to fish on Friday and due to the storm Dennis forecast for Saturday we cancelled those boats also.

Sunday morning following heavy overnight rain from storm Dennis we arrived onsite to find the water level was as high as we have seen it for several years with the influx of water reducing the clarity. I doubt clarity will be good enough to fish much before this Thursday.

Poor week fishing effected by both major storms.

As always, we recommend you call the lodge before you travel for latest updates 01530 230807
