Thornton weekly fishing report 31/03/2012

With the clocks going forward to summer time we should start to see an improvement to the weather.

It must be as frustrating to you the anglers as it is to me as a fishery manager that sport currently is excellent but the weather forecast is keeping rods away. However on this mornings BBC forecast they are at last giving an improvement this morning it certainly feels less cold.

Our rod average this week is 5.1 with anglers continuing to catch along the bank opposite the lodge, wood and wood corner, not surprising as this is the sheltered bank.

Nick Coomry fished Thornton for the first time catching and returning 15 trout off the bank, another first time visitor Phil Haney also managed 5 from the bank.

Intermediate and sinking lines with yellow booby, cats whisker, green pea and diawl bach were the most successful methods.

Water clarity as the rod average suggest is OK with visibility over 3ft

Main Gate, Lodge & bank fishing open from 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 7.15pm

Part Day Boats 8.30am – 1.30pm  /   1.30pm – 7.15pm

All anglers offsite by 7.30pm

Update for Easter

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton Update 28/03/2013

Weather at last and in time for Easter is improving with the air temperature today well above where it has been, actually today was the warmest day we have had since we opened.

Our water clarity is the best its been since we opened in early February with Dave Pritchard catching 6 fish today, on spooning the fish some had immature damsels and fry in them!

Rod average this week so far is over 4 with bank & boat anglers catching, although for the bank anglers the trout are not as close in as they were.

Best Flies: Booby, Cats Whisker, Tadpole, Diawl Bach

Thornton Weekly Report week ending 24/03/2013

Somebody needs to tell the weather it’s officially Spring!

Another week when the cold weather has kept anglers off the bank & out of the boats with only 32 rods fishing, they did however attain a rod average of 3.9. Good sport considering the conditions.

With the water temperature struggling to get past 5 degrees its not surprising a fast sinking line with booby, blobs, cats whiskers and tadpoles caught the majority of the trout.

Best area continues to be the bank opposite the lodge, wood, wood bank corner, not surprising as these areas provide the shelter from the cold easterly winds

Update 14/03/2013

Thornton Update 14/03/2013

With Thornton six weeks into our season having opened in early February is now fishing as we would expect with the rod average this week at an excellent 5.6

Its a shame anglers are taking too much notice of the weather man as on many days the actual weather has been far better than forecast.

As you would expect sinking lines with booby, blobs & cat whisker patterns are catching the majority but an intermediate has also worked with a fritz damsel with some rods taking fish on buzzers.
With a good head of fish in the reservoir our good sport should continue, dont forget Easter falls on the 29th March get your boat bookings in early

Thornton weekly fishing report week ending 10/02/2013

Despite the weather forecast Thornton is enjoying a far better March with 69 rods catching 400 trout for rod average 5.8

Bank and boat anglers are catching with the shallows opposite the lodge, wood bank & wood bank corner fishing best, not surprising as these areas offer the anglers some protection from the cold easterlies.

Sinking lines with a booby, cat whisker and tadpole or an intermediate with a fritz damsel and cats whisker have been the most productive methods. A few fish have been taken on buzzer and bloodworm patterns.

Our clarity continues to improve as our rod average 5.8 indicates.

Main gate, lodge and bank fishing open from 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 5.45pm

Part Day Boats 8.30am – 1.00pm / 1.00pm – 5.45pm

Fishing report week ending 03/03/2013

With our water clarity continuing to improve the fishing gets better & better

Last week 75 rods caught 268 trout for rod average 3.6

Bank anglers can often enjoy the best of the sport this time of year as the majority of the trout are taken within yards of the bank along the shallows opposite the lodge, wood bank & along the slightly deeper water along the lonesome pine.

Colwick Fly Fishers held a club match at Thornton returning an average of 4.3 with trout to 3lb+ recorded

Fast sinking lines with booby, cats whisker, damsel fritz orange tadpole have worked best but during the warmest part of the day a few anglers have caught on buzzer & apps bloodworm patterns

Main Gate, Lodge & bank fishing open from 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 5.30pm

Part Day Boats 8.30am – 1.00pm  /  1.00pm – 5.30pm

Few anglers ventured out with last week’s cold Siberian blast seeing ice forming in the rod rings, not great.

The trout that were caught unsurprisingly were on fast sinking lines short leaders with blobs, booby, cats whisker fished mainly along the Thornton Arm & corner of the wood.

Water flowing into the reservoir is clear if the clarity of the main reservoir improved by another 4 inches we would see a dramatic improvement.

Lodge, main gate & bank fishing open 7.30am with boats available from 8.30am.

Boats off the water by 5.15pm with all anglers off site 5.45pm

More rain & snow early last week did not help, however at long last it looks like the weather forecast is going our way, dry & cold should see an improvement in our water

A few hardy souls did venture out with any fish caught coming to a fast sinking line & bright lures down the middle of the Thornton arm

Fishing report week ending 10/02/13

Conditions have still not improved as much as I hoped, clarity is not great with visibility just over 12inches

Some brave soles who did venture out did catch a few trout but with the rod average at 1.1 it just about says it all, to compound matters the cold spell during the week had the water temperature slightly above 4 degrees

Some overwintered were taken & these are full of bloodworm

Clarity needs to improve by another 4 inches or so & water temp needs to reach that magic 5 degree mark

As always our advice contact the lodge for latest report before travelling
