Fishing report week ending 03/02/13

Best laid plans once again spoilt by the weather, the quick thaw & snow melt last week resulted in the reservoir once again coloured with poor visibility.
On our advice most anglers cancelled however a few hardy souls ventured out and as expected sport was slow.

The rod average for the opening three days was 1.2 to be honest it was higher than I expected!
Water clarity is improving daily by Wednesday / Thursday of this week we should start to see an improvement

As always our advice contact the lodge for latest report before travelling
Main car park, lodge & bank fishing open from 7.30am

Fry patterns are the order of the day with minkie, zonker, minkie booby, cats whisker all catching fish. As you would expect the trout are moving out of the deeper water towards the shallows after the fry with the wood bank, Thornton arm & farm bank all areas worth trying.

Thornton weekly report week ending 21/10/12

91 rods caught 220 trout for a rod average of 2.4, our water clarity is excellent and our levels are full.

The condition of the trout been caught is excellent with 20% of the trout caught weighing over 3lb, these last few weeks of the season always produce our best looking trout.

As you would expect for late October fry patterns are taking the majority of the trout but M Martindale caught 3 on buzzers, Brian Fox continues to catch on buzzers taking another 8 trout while Steve Warner fished from his float tube for a morning session catching 4 to 3lb on damsel and hares ear.

The area in front of the lodge, corner of the wood, green bay and above the farm bank have all produced this past week with Wet Cell 2, DI3 & DI5 lines with minkie booby, Zonker and cats whisker all patterns taking fish.

Thornton weekly report week ending 14th Oct 2012

Not a bad weeks fishing for us with 121 rods catching 279 trout for a rod average 2.3

Autumn is well & truly with us & our fishing is on the change as well as the trout move off the buzzer & start looking for the autumn bonus feat “fry”

Brian Fox kept faith with his buzzers and had an excellent catch of 14 rainbows including fish of 5lb4oz & 4lb8oz, returning a few days later to catch another 9 trout to 2lb8oz, John Considine fished damsel and fry patterns taking fish to 4lb8oz.

As the week moved on the trout have started to move from the deeper water located around the orange buoys and dam wall with the shallows of the wood bank, green bay and farm bank starting to fish.

Our reservoir level remains full and our water clarity is excellent.

Thornton remains open to 18th November

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 6.15pm

Part Day Boats 8.30am – 1.30pm / 1.30pm – 6.15pm

Thornton weekly report week ending 24/09/2012

A better week for us with the rod average at 2.0 as 109 rods caught 219 trout for the week

Harold Chapman won the Thornton Fly Fishers senior competition fished during the morning session, Harold caught 4 fish on a floating line and buzzers.

Brian Fox is the man in form fishing twice last week catching 10 trout on buzzers during his first visit & 11 on his second visit, his catches included fish of 3lb8oz & a superbly conditioned rainbow of 6lb8oz

Tony Lorrimer fished his bunny leeches to deadly effect recording 13 trout to 4lb

The weather on Sunday took a turn for the worst a biting cold easterly & rain, however Mark Goode & Fred Kettle despite the conditions enjoyed an excellent day catching 6 trout to 3lb14oz & 4 trout to 4lb12oz with the majority taking a small hot spot nymph

For most of the week damsel variants, buzzer, daddy & cruncher produced best with a few trout starting to come to minkie patterns, I would expect the fry patterns to start taking more & more fish as we leave September & move into October

Main gate & lodge open from 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 7.15pm

Part Day Boats 8.30am – 2.00pm  /   2.00pm – 7.15pm

Thornton weekly report week ending 16/09/12

During the past week 107 rods caught 189 trout for rod average 1.8

Keith Cowan enjoyed another successful visit using buzzers to take his 8 fish including 5lb rainbow, B Finch fished a morning session and caught 5 trout to 5lb, B Fox recorded 9 fish to 3lb8oz for his morning visit with T Miles also taking a rainbow of 5lb3oz, Keith Coley & J Bebbington recorded fish of 5lb+ as did N James. A. Wolloff  recorded a 5lb8oz rainbow as did Mick Huffer

Floating line with damsel, buzzer & daddies were the most productive method with the area in front of the dam, green bay & large orange buoy favourite.

Generally the morning session continues to be the best part of the day to fish as the temperature in the evening has quickly fallen away. Water level remains full with the clarity good.

Lodge & main car park open from 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 7.45pm

Part Day Boats 8.30am – 2.00pm  / 2pm – 7.45pm

Thornton weekly update week ending 09/09/12

It was great to feel a bit of sun on your back last week after all the wet weather, but we paid a price with the glorious weather not helping the fishing.

Last week 132 rods caught 169 trout for 1.3 rod average. During the early part of the week sinking lines & booby was the most productive method as anglers went after the trout in the cooler deeper water in front of the main dam & orange buoy area.

Some anglers who did persevere with buzzers & nymph did catch John Spick & M Curtis caught 8 for their mornings visit, Keith Cowen caught 3 on buzzers before the bright conditions forced him onto the booby to catch a further 6 trout, M Pepper & John Smith caught 12 on buzzers from Green Bay the key to catching on buzzers or nymphs was to fish them as slow as possible or even static.

Lines that worked this week were floaters, intermediate & fast sinkers with booby, damsel, diawl bach & buzzers.

Our water level remains full with our clarity good.

Main gate & lodge open 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 8.00pm
