Thornton Weekly report week ending 02/09/12

Last week 110 rods caught 198 trout for rod average 1.8 with the morning continuing to fish best.

During the past week the area fishing best has altered from being in front of the lodge Thornton arm to the main dam into green bay & the large orange buoy area producing best with the daddy proving to be the top pattern especially during any warm overcast periods.

This warmer spell of weather has encouraged the damsels with good numbers of them to be seen on the water this past week.

Andy Burton fished the dam wall – green bay area & caught trout weighing 3ln & 4lb on a daddy, A. Lawson caught 6 trout to 5lb on daddy, sedge & damsel, Jack Hives fished a morning session recording 4 trout to 4lb, Ben Lamb fished hares ear, olive emergers & buzzers to take his 6 fish to 4lb12oz

Mornings continue to be the most productive time of the day to fish, although traditionally during September we can expect some good evening sport to buzzers & sedges.

Water level remains full with clarity good

Thornton Weekly report ending 13/08/12

The hottest spell of weather for a few weeks & I expected the fishing at Thornton to become hard, how wrong I was, a few days mid week it wasn’t that easy but over the weekend the fishing was as good as it gets for August

During the week 113 rods caught 249 trout for a rod average 2.2 with most of the trout falling to floating or intermediate lines with a damsel, diawl bach, buzzer, cruncher & an orange foamed body daddy all working.

Again the trout are not were you would expect them for the time of year, they are not in the deeper water but were to be found from the mouth of the Markfield arm past the lonesome pine down to the farm gate.

Notable catches were made by Keith Coley, John Bebbington, Phil Bruce & Thornton regular Norma Prime who all recorded catches in double figures.

David Pallot  recorded the best fish of the week a rainbow of 5lb

Water clarity is good with the water temperature cool for the time of year.

Our water level is at normal level once again with clarity described as good.

Last week 95 rods caught 171 trout for a rod average of 1.8 with the morning producing best results for most of the week.

Saturday & Sunday evening gave us the best evening rise of the season so far (it been a long time coming) with plenty of trout moving from the corner of the wood out to the orange buoy & back towards the boat pontoon.

Floating lines with buzzer, diawl bach & damsel patterns have produced best although a few more trout are being taken on dry daddy patterns. Unsurprisingly and with the amount of daphnia in the water the orange blob continues as it has every week this season featured in the returns.

Dave Rossin caught a rainbow 4lb12oz, Martin Vernon caught trout of 3lb4oz & 3lb5oz, Len Dobson 3lb, Keith Coley 4lb, Mat Vickers 3lb, M. Glover 3lb, David Price & Neil James 3lb & John Bebbington 3lb8oz.

With the evening starting to draw in please take note of the fishery opening and closing times.

A mixed weeks fishing, with the weather / rain yet again having an impact, by Friday morning our water level had returned to normal, only for it to rain Friday night & with the ground totally saturated its unsurprising the level once again went up, wellingtons were required to walk onto the pontoon Saturday morning. By Sunday the extra water had run off and you could once again get onto the pontoon in shoes.

Its not ideal but with the ground as wet as it is any rain is going to bring the level up, however as soon as it stops raining the level will start to return to normal, I suggest you contact the lodge for latest info before you travel.

Our water clarity despite all this rain and water levels up, then down & then up again is surprisingly good with visibility at least 3ft.

Last week 99 rods caught 217 trout for rod average 2.2 with the majority of the trout falling to intermediate or floating lines with damsel, buzzer, hares ear & blob.

Best area, shallows of the Thornton arm, orange buoys, green bay, farm bank.

Standard and quality of the trout coming out is excellent with most in the 2b – 4lb range.

Main gate lodge and car park open from 7.30am

Full Day Boats 8.30am – 9.45pm
Part Day Boats 8.30am – 3.00pm / 3.00pm – 9.45

62 rods caught 167 trout rod average 2.7

And here is your weekly weather report!

Its seems like I’m writing a report on last week’s weather as the weather currently is dominating the fishing.

Last week the rain and especially Friday’s deluge kept rods away with the level at Thornton rising by a good 18in+ on Friday.

Friday night coming off the pontoon the water level was up to your knees, by Saturday morning it was still above wellington height.

By Sunday if you wore wellingtons you could get onto the pontoon, Monday (today 9th July) you still need willies, if your coming fishing be sure and bring wellingtons to gain access to the pontoon.

As you would expect with such a torrent of water the reservoir has coloured, visibility is not great at around 2ft but rods who ventured out on Saturday and Sunday all reported hooking trout.

On Saturday Mitch went out in his tube and caught 3 on Sunday Brian Sibley caught 3 to 3lb, Mr Young caught 6 While Matt Vickers came for an evening and caught 2 with the best 4lb10oz both fish were seen rising and Matt took them both on a dry orange daddy. Despite the colour its obviously clear enough for the trout to see a fly.

Before the rain, buzzers, damsel were working best.

Call the lodge for latest info.

Its hard to believe from next week we shall start to notice a gradual shortening of daylight hours, where has this year and its summer gone?

This report this year is starting to sound more like a weekly weather report than a fishing one!!

Thursday Thornton was caught in the freak weather that drifted across the midlands with a Tornado, no exaggeration, catching the corner of the reservoir causing damage to the trees in green bay and down the Markfield arm, the resulting thunder storm and torrential rain did bring in a large volume of water into the reservoir resulting in the fishery being unfishable on Friday.

Surprisingly the water conditions had improved by Saturday and by Sunday water clarity was good once again with the rod average on Sunday a very respectable 4.7

During the week 112 rods caught 353 trout for rod average 3.2 with the majority falling to floating or intermediate lines with damsel, hares ear, buzzer and orange blob.

Fish spooned this week are still in the main feeding on daphnia with an increasing number of damsel nymphs. The trout caught off the shallows of the Thornton arm are feeding hard on small snails. Huge hatches of sedge in the evenings

Water clarity is good, water temperature is low for the time of year, fishing conditions are ideal.

Great average size getting caught with most trout between 2lb-4lb with 3 fish over 5lb.

Morning session has fished best during last week.

Great average size coming out of Thornton this past fortnight with anglers committing on the quality, most of the fish coming to the scales have weighed between 2lb – 4lb

Morning session is still producing best as our late evening buzzer hatches continue to be well below what we would expect during a normal year.

Yet more rain this past week but our water clarity remains good to excellent and unsurprising considering the cooler temperatures.

Floating and intermediate lines with damsel, orange fritz & buzzer have caught best with the Markfield arm, corner of the wood and farm bank producing best although in a northerly or westerly wind the car park area has produced some excellent catches

Terry Barton fished a morning session fishing buzzers on a washing line to catch 9, Tony Lorrimer caught 21 for his day while Dave Pacey recorded 16, Keith Coley and John Bebbington recorded 22, Gordon Porter fished a morning session catching 7 on a corixa pattern and blob while Mark Sturgess caught 12 to 5lb8oz, Richard Dayman caught 6 trout for a total bag weight of 17lb5oz.

Morning session has fished best during last week.

Rain, cold daytime temperatures, but it suits the fishing, pull on your waterproof clothing the 91 rods who fished last week caught 281 trout for a rod average 3

Despite the rain and the water level going up again, its been running over the overflow constantly since late April, our water clarity is great, gin clear is the description used by many of the visiting anglers.

The fish are not in the usual places you would expect them to be for late June with the corner of the wood and Thornton arm fishing well with buzzer, orange blob and damsel patterns.

Generally the morning to mid afternoon is fishing best we are not getting the evening rise as the temperature seems to drop by quite a large margin each evening.

Daphnia still remains the trout’s No1 food item although a few fish caught up the Thornton arm have had a few snails in them. Increasing number of damsels about a settled spell of warmer weather should see these numbers increase.

Longest Day falls on 21st June it won’t be long before were asking “were did that season go?”

Another wet week but despite the heavy rainfall which has kept Thornton brimming full our water clarity is excellent.

The weather kept rods away this week for large chunks of the week with only 88 rods fishing they caught 167 trout for a 1.9 rod average.

Pin fry & damsel are about know but yet again this week on spooning fish daphnia was the number 1 food item, I have never seen so much daphnia in the water or the trout feeding on it for such a long period.

A mixed variety of methods caught fish this past week with a floating line & diawl bach, cruncher, buzzer and apps bloodworm to buzzers fished under an indicator. Intermediate lines with orange blobs & damsel patterns have also worked with a couple of anglers fishing on the drift with a fast sinking line & sparkler tubes catching well on the drift from the pontoon to the stones.

Morning session has fished best during last week

132 rods caught 289 trout for rod average 2.2

Despite the weekends rain our water clarity is “gin clear” its as good as it gets!

Water temperature is starting to drop after the past fortnights heat and is down to 17 degrees.
Daphnia is still the main food item were finding in the trout with a few small buzzer with member Mick Glover catching a trout this morning full of this years jelly fry, he was fishing off the corner of the wood. Plenty of sedge about in the evenings with the first of the damsel spotted last week.

Markfield arm with the area from the area from the lonesome pine to the farm bank fishing best with the stones and green bay also worth a look. Our evening rise is still very much hit or miss, a constant spell of westerly winds and steady daytime temps is what we need.

Successful methods last week were either a fast sinking line with orange booby, olive booby or orange blob or a floating line with buzzer or cruncher. The morning session is generally fishing best.
