Weekly Report Week ending 12th April 2015

Typical April weather, nice one minute, cold, wet & windy next.

On the better days boat & bank anglers caught well along the Thornton Arm & wood however by Friday anglers were reporting large numbers of trout feeding on ever improving buzzer hatches down the Markfield arm, unfortunately the wind over the weekend put paid to any fishing down there.

Bloodworm, buzzer & damsel are still the top patterns with our surface water temperature at 11 degrees & climbing we will I expect this coming week with a warmer forecast see a few evening rises.

Weekly Report Week ending 5th April 2015

Excellent fishing to the start of Easter, the improving weather conditions certainly helped with 636 trout caught for a rod average 7.4

Boat & bank anglers have enjoyed the good fishing with many of the fish caught within 20 yards of the bank.

To start the week the shallows opposite the lodge produced best but as we entered the weekend the corner of the wood, lonesome pine & farm bank became the “hot spots”

Floating or intermediate lines with damsel, buzzer & bloodworm producing best

Lots of small black buzzer hatching but as the weather improved towards the weekend we started to see a few of the larger grey/black buzzer hatching.

N James recorded a rainbow of 4lb4oz, M Cross a rainbow of 4lb12oz, Mike Cupitt fished the bank catching 14 trout on a damsel the best weighed 5lb6oz, A Miles 5lb11oz rainbow

Weekly Report Week ending 29th March 2015

Monday to Friday of last provided good fishing conditions and excellent sport however with a windy forecast over Saturday & Sunday we took the decision to not allow any boats out.

On the fishable days last week a total of 496 trout were caught for a rod average 6.7 The best area continues to be the shallows opposite the lodge, in front of the wood to the corner with an intermediate or floating line with a blue flash damsel, hares ear, apps bloodworm with more & more fish falling to buzzers.

Trout are incredibly close to the banks with bank anglers catching good numbers.

Good number of browns being recorded with many anglers returning the browns, although the majority are in the 1lb8oz class a number up to 3lb have been reported.

Aide Iliffe caught the largest rainbow of the week a 5lb8oz other good sized rainbows were recorded by N James 4lb9oz, R Dayman 4lb8oz, M Cross 3lb14oz & D Price 3lb

Weekly Report Week ending 22nd March 2015

Fishing continues to improve with 102 rods last week catching 678 trout for a rod average 6.6 with boat and bank anglers enjoying the good sport.

Last week I reported that the Mallard & Claret had worked for one bank angler, this week Simon Giles used another old traditional wet fly pattern the KeHe to take 4 trout from the bank.

Other fly patterns working this week, Damsel, cats whisker, Hares Ear, apps bloodworm & buzzer fished on either a floating or intermediate line

Best areas, Thornton arm opposite the lodge, wood bank, lonesome pine with most of the trout taken within 15 yds of the bank.

Royal Oak Fly Fishers fished one of their club matches at Thornton on Sunday returning a rod average 7.6 for their match with the eventual winner Frank Parker with 8 fish for 19lb

With the first of the sand martins passing through last week the warmer weather won’t be too far behind, spooning fish over the weekend they are currently feeding hard on tiny black buzzers with some bloodworm

Wednesday was the significant day from then onwards our catches improved.

The trout are close in on the margins opposite the lodge and down in front of the wood with intermediate lines with cats whisker, green pea & damsel patterns being the most productive method.

Weekly Report Week ending 8th February

The 2015 season at Thornton opened on the 1st February.

Despite the cold wind and a third of the reservoir covered by ice most of last week the main catching area opposite the lodge and wood bank has remained ice free.

Not surprising with the cold weather the trout are hard on the bottom it’s a case if not catching keep on the move, a move of 10 yards can put you on a pod of fish.

Sinking lines in the main have worked best although on the calmer and warmer days an intermediate has worked.

Flies, booby orange or black and green, tadpole black & green or apps bloodworm.

104 rods killed 136 trout returning 201 for an average 3.2

Main Gate, Lodge & Bank Fishing open 7.30am

Boats Available from 8.30am – 4.30pm

Part Day Boats 8.30 – 12.30pm  /   12.30pm – 4.30pm

Thornton 2015 Opening Day Report

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report  The 2015 season at Thornton opened on the 1st February.

The weather forecast had a number of people cancel their booking but on the day we eventually had far better weather than expected, although cold the winds were notably less than expected.

The snow melt during the middle of the week did put some colour into the water visibility is still good for fishing.

As usual the shallows along the Thornton arm opposite the lodge and down off the wood bank corner was the area to fish with the trout running close along the margins.

Intermediate or sinking lines was the way to go with orange booby, black & green tadpole or the Apps bloodworm taking the majority of the trout.

Clive Wilkins was top rod on the bank catching 14 trout including one brown while season permit holders Mark Hunt & Brian Sibley were the top boat anglers catching 10 apiece

Opening day rod average 3.7

Main Gate, Lodge & Bank Fishing open 7.30am
