Thornton Weekly update week ending 13th October

The weather this past week was not ideal with strong winds and heavy rain at times.

Despite the rain our water clarity remains good

The weed beds along the Thornton arm, wood bank and down towards the lonesome pine are holding increasing numbers of trout as the trout start moving in on the fry.

Some anglers are still getting some sport to nymph & buzzers with Mark Hunt fishing in the worst of the weather on Saturday fishing a dry daddy to catch as did Dennis Barnes earlier in the week to take fish to 4lb4oz

Anglers using Minkies and fry patterns are finding that using the patterns on a floating line are producing best results

The best of the sport seems to be mid morning through to late afternoon.

The autumn great time to be out on the midland reservoirs

Our last four hours fishing 1 fish kill + Catch & Release £10 and a rowing boat £4.00 offers great value.

Thornton Weekly update week ending 6th October

This past week we held the Steve Parton Memorial match, 14 float tubers up against 14 boat anglers, the eventual winners is unimportant suffice to say the tubers trounced the boat angler, Jeanna Parton and family attended to hand out the winners trophy, this will become an annual event

Our fish are starting to move into the margins, the weed beds in front of the willows in particular are starting to hold good numbers, Cive Holt caught 6 from this area on Monday evening.

A few trout are still falling to the daddy but fry patterns are taking the majority of the trout with a floating fry, white muddler or minkie booby pulled through the surface getting lots of follows,

Andy Burton and Russ Martin both recorded trout weighing over 5lb this week with a number of anglers recording trout weighing 3lb or more

Best area green bay, wood bank and weed beds along the shallows.

Thornton Weekly update week ending 30th September

A change in the fishing this week, daddies were the fly of choice at the start of the week but towards the end of the week and the cooler east winds more and more trout started falling to fry patterns and blobs

With a rod average of 2.5 this past week and a significant number of 3lb+ trout caught, 16 trout over 4lb recorded with Phil Dougan taking a 5lb rainbow, Ian Lindsey 5lb, with T McInally taking the best fish of the week 6lb8oz rainbow as we move into October we can expect some good fish to be taken.

The trout are starting to move from the deeper water into the arms and along the weed beds looking for the fry as we move into October the weed beds will start to produce more and more fish.

Members of the Complete Fisher Forum had their annual weekend get together at Thornton, they had a great weekend look forward to seeing you all next year

Best patterns, daddies, minkie, cats whisker, blob

Thornton Weekly update week ending 22nd September

A great end to the week, glorious weather, lots of daddies, buzzer and sedge on the water providing great dry fly sport. We are experiencing some of the best daddy fishing in years

Mark Goode who does a great deal of work supporting the Leicestershire Disabled angling club bought a small group of anglers to Thornton on Sunday with Mark fishing a daddy to catch 17 trout including a 4lb brown.

Junior angler Tom Gamble fished from his float tube to catch 7 trout including 5 brown with the biggest weighing 4lb. Mr Walklate fished an afternoon session using a deer hair sedge to catch 8 trout to 3lb, Mark Hunt fished a morning session catching 6 fish including two over 4lb on diwal bach and buzzer. Good old traditional wet fly the Kate McLaren caught 16 trout including a 4lb brown for Alex Rankin. Tony Lorrimer caught 10 trout for his visit while Clive Holt fished a late evening session taking 5 trout to 5lb2oz

The majority of the trout are still out over the deeper water but with the cooler nights it won’t be long before they start moving into the arms. This past week daddies and hoppers reigned supreme but a few trout did fall to white boobies on a washing lines, these trout were already feeding hard on the fry.

Thornton Weekly update week ending 15th September

It has that autumn feel about it, cooler morning & evenings but great fishing weather with the majority of the trout caught this past week on floating lines with dries especially the daddy, suspender buzzer & muddlers with the fishery rod average 2.7

The orange buoy to the dam wall & across to the main car park produced best but get the wind in the south west blowing down the Markfield arm its certainly been worth a visit.

Mark Hunt fished the Markfield arm taking 9 trout to 4lb8oz on klinks & buzzer, Brian Sibley used a daddy to catch his 6 fish on Saturday morning while Mr Liggins & son fished the last four hour session using a daddy to boat 11 trout, Neil Bates fished an afternoon session catching his 6 fish limit. Andy Dermott fished hoppers & daddies to catch his 10 fish for his morning visit.

As is often the case as we enter the autumn we start catching trout which have been in the water for some time, D Timms 5lb rainbow, W Lewin 5lb4oz rainbow, A Dermott 5lb rainbow & Bob Memhams fished a daddy to catch 5lb8oz rainbow picture on our facebook page
