70 acres

Tel: 01530 230807

Our surface water temperature is dropping & is below 19 degrees allowing us to restock all three reservoirs in the group this week, (stocking occurred 2 August)

The deeper cooler water in front of the stones, green bay & dam has generally fished best this week again, although on the cooler overcast days anglers found fish along the edge of the weed beds opposite the lodge down in front of the wood bank.

Anglers reported fish prepared to chase flies through the surface with some fish coming to dries, especially the “big red” & daddy.

Mark Hunt suffering from jet lag following his Alaskan fishing trip, quickly dropped back in to the UK fishing mode catching 8 from the green bay area & along the weed beds of the wood, Tut Miles fished hares ear and cdc patterns to catch his 4 fish during a morning session, Mick Huffer recorded 4 for his 3 hour session.

Rod average for the week was 1.0

Thornton weekly report week ending 3rd  July 2016

With the water clarity improving and our water temperature at 17.5 degrees our fishing improved from the week before although it’s fair to say, no two days fished the same. Our rod average for the week was 1.8

Generally mornings are producing best with the deeper water in front of the main car park, green bay, orange buoy & stones fishing best with most of the fish in the top 6ft of water. Not surprising therefore an intermediate line or Sink rate 3 sinking line has produced best with blue flash damsel, snakes, orange blob & hares ear.

92 year John Everett caught 6 for his mornings visit on an orange blob picture on our facebook page www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore Chris Gaughan took a mornings trip in his float tube catching 4 but reporting plenty of pulls and follows to a damsel and cats whisker, Mark Hunt opted for an evening session boating 5 trout mainly pin fry feeders which he caught on a minkie and FAB, while Betty Miles followed the advice at the lodge and fished the blue flash damsel to record 8 trout.

Hatches: Caenis, huge numbers of damsel, huge numbers pin fry, sedges

Mornings are best with little or no rise in the evenings.

Water temp 17.5 degrees, clarity improving.

Thornton weekly report week ending 26th June

A tough week for us at Thornton, the showers when they came were at times torrential. We have however been left with a brown algae which has made the fishing difficult at times, reflected in a rod average of 1.0

We are fortunate to have Foremark and Draycote within our group of fisheries and have advised customers to visit them until our fishing picks up

Another stocking last week should see an upturn in catches once this present brown algae bloom has gone.

It’s not all gloom and doom Simon Giles who started fly tying the other year tried out his new small fry patterns catching 5 and losing others for his Sunday morning visit, Andrew Wilson took our advice and fished damsel patterns mid water catching 3 but reported missing many more for his Sunday morning visit,  Paul Martindale fished a morning session fishing an intermediate and a blue flash damsel to catch 6 trout, Adrian Freer fished a medium sinking line to catch 8 trout on hares ears and damsel patterns again on a morning session

Hatches: Caenis, huge numbers of damsel, huge numbers pin fry, sedges

Mornings are best with little or no rise in the evenings.

Water temp 18 degrees, clarity cloudy due to brown algae bloom.

Thornton weekly report week ending 19th June

Unsettled weather for most of last week, with heavy downpours towards the end of the week which pushed up the water level in the reservoir, on this occasion our clarity remained good at 6ft, the bonus of the influx of water was the reduced surface water temperature dropping from 21 degrees the week before to 17.50 degrees today.

Overall not many rods out due to the forecast, with fishing I think best described as unsettled, despite a fresh stocking on Wednesday.

No clear method stood out with anglers catching using boobies deep to damsels mid water & dries on the surface.

What has stood out this past week is the amount of pin fry about which the trout quickly turned their attention onto, especially along the wood, stones & green bay.

Geoff Willis caught a 3lb rainbow, with Chris Sayer recording a 4lb4oz rainbow one of 8 he caught on a small booby and buzzer fished on an intermediate, Mick Hanson fished a morning session and caught 6 while Mark Hunt fished a shipmans to catch his 8 trout.

Another stocking this week with the forecast likely to favour cooler water temperatures we should see an upturn in the sport.

 Rod average 1.3

Thornton weekly report week ending 12th June

Tel: 01530 230807

Although it was great to feel the sun on your back last week the bright conditions and high temperatures quickly pushed the surface water temperature up and by Thursday we registered a surface water temperature of 21 degrees, not surprising therefore the trout moved off the surface with anglers using intermediate & mid range sinkers catching best.

Good numbers of damsel hatching not surprising therefore damsel patterns featured heavily in the catches as did the snake pattern. Anglers fishing straight line buzzers or buzzers under an indicator also caught with size 14 buzzers best. The deeper cooler water of the main basin produced best.

With pin fry in the water we will expect to see an increasing number of trout turning their attention onto these, small hares ear, silver invicta, silver thorax pheasant tail and small sparkle booby will often work on trout feeding on the pin fry, with the cooler conditions these pin fry feeders will be located in front of the wood and along the stones.

Today as I write the report 13th June our surface temperature has dropped to a far better 18.5 degrees, water clarity is excellent, with fish moving on the surface again this morning.

The forecast for this week, showers and lower temperatures will be ideal for the midland reservoirs.

 Rod average 1.6

Thornton weekly report week ending 5th June

Tel: 01530 230807

For most of last week we had ideal conditions, overcast with a breeze resulting in great surface sport, by the weekend the forecast indicated warmer brighter conditions which arrived, however most anglers still caught their fish high in the water.

Monday T Pegg used cruncher and diawl bach to record 13 trout to 4lb2oz, Tony Bokenham fished black buzzer to catch 6 trout to 3lb8oz, on Tuesday Mark Hunt fished a morning session with size 14 hoppers and cruncher to record 14 trout. Chris Sayer fished a morning session catching 8 trout with Dave Saunt also fishing the morning catching 13, with damsels hatching in increasing numbers Neil James fished damsel nymph to catch his 6 trout. Martin Clay made the most of Saturdays mornings cloud cover catching 10 on buzzers with Andy Hubbard catching 4 fish to 4lb8oz on a damsel nymph for his morning session

As the week progressed size of fly became important with size 14 buzzers and dries working best with floating lines, midge tips or intermediate lines.

Late evening has been excellent Ged Odonoghue and Mark Hunt caught well into double figures on their evenings visit, the method, fish on the drift, low diameter line and size 14 sparsely dressed hoppers, wirh Ged using a bushy fly on the top dropper as an attractor

Best patterns, size14 green or black buzzers, size14 suspender buzzer. Dries size14 – hopper, owl, big red. Nymph – damsel, cruncher. Lures – Muddler

Water clarity is excellent. Rod average 3.1

No sign yet of pin fry but we expect to see them this week!

A week of top of the water sport, with buzzers & dries working best with some anglers enjoying exciting sport fishing a muddler pulled through the wave. Thornton weekly report week ending 22nd May

Tel: 01530 230807

A much better week for us at Thornton, although the weather forecast wasn’t great at times the fishing was good returning a rod average of 4.0 for the week

Large hatches of buzzer, overcast conditions resulted in the fish feeding on or near the surface most of the week with a floating line, midge tip or intermediate all that was required with buzzer, cruncher, diawl bach, hares ears, muddlers & dries

Typically for us at this time of year boats are out fishing the bank with the main basin, stones and Markfield Arm producing best with anglers staying on to fish the last hour enjoying terrific evening sport.

Monday Clive Holt fished the evening rise and caught 6, on Tuesday Steve Windram & Phil Cross shared a boat catching 15 on damsel, Wednesday T Pegg found fish moving all day along the stones catching 19 on a black diawl bach, Thursday Keith Cowen caught his limit on damsels with Clive Holt returning to fish the evening rise being rewarded with 6 trout.

By Friday and the weekend although windy on Saturday the algae had cleared and the fishing was superb with Danny Lovegrove And Rob Middleton fishing small buzzers and small daddies to record 25 fish for their boat, Jamie Scott came to fish the evening rise with dries boating 8 trout, on Saturday Martin Clay and Colin Meads shared a boat for the morning session catching 20 trout on size 14 grey buzzer, Mark Hunt fished top of the water to record 24 trout on Sunday Andy Hubbard called in for the morning session recording 5 trout.

However top angler of the week was the Osprey who visited us on Tuesday taking a trout for his supper from amongst the boats fishing the main basin.

Thornton weekly report week ending 16th May

Thornton returned a rod average of 2.9 for the week

A bit of a mixture this week, some anglers have caught on sinking lines with booby, orange tadpole, damsel patterns especially during the first half of the day with anglers fishing the afternoon session into the evening gaining success on the midge tip & floating lines with buzzers, crunchers & dries.

We are seeing an evening rise most evenings, however it can all happen in the last 40 minutes!

Some hawthorn about with the fish rising to them, main area for the hawthorn is along the stones & down past the lonesome pine.

Monday evening Peter Wurm caught 7 during the evening rise, on Tuesday Peter Wrigley fished buzzers during a morning session to catch 14, Adrian Freer fished an intermediate with buzzers for his mornings visit  catch of 5 trout , on Thursday Brian White fished a sinker in front of the dam to record 7 trout again during a morning session, on Saturday Andre Russell float tubed the morning with a size 14 grey buzzer fished static to catch 9 while Martin Clay fished black buzzers on a washing line to catch 12. J Bowmar & S Clay fished dries during the evening rise boating 5 trout. Mark Hunt found success with his midge tip by the orange buoy using crunchers to record 11 trout.

Some algae still to be seen in the water although it has started to clear over the weekend. Water temperature at 12 degrees, we should see a rise most evenings

Thornton weekly report week ending 8th May

Tel: 01530 230807

A bit of a mixed week with the rod average at 2.6, combination of strong winds & an algae bloom.

As you would expect for early May the trout are well spread throughout the fishery with anglers catching from the Farm bank to the corner of the wood and across to green bay. Bank anglers are still catching off the lonesome pine & off the farm bank. Best of the sport has generally being late morning onwards.

Floating lines with buzzers, damsel and diawl bach was the method most anglers went for a few did well fishing slow sinkers with orange fritz or a fast sinker with short leaders and white booby

81 year old Pam Shuttlewood who only started fly fishing when she turned 70 had a day to remember taking her first ever limit bag which included a brown trout she returned. Dave Leavesley bank fished from 3pm – 6pm with a sparsely tied muddler catching 16 trout.

A number of overwintered browns were caught this week with Nev Welsh catching 10 trout from green bay including an overwintered brown, photo on our facebook page www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore

We should see the hawthorn fly this week with the area along the stones & from the lonesome pine down the Markfield arm being the favourite area.

Our late evening sport should continue to improve with fish moving at night to good buzzer hatches
