Sport remains difficult at Thornton, although we have during the last few days started to see a few of our larger claret buzzer which we expect to see during late August and early September with a few fish starting to move, although it generally remains tough.

A few fish were taken from the deeper water in front of the dam & across to the stones with booby or small cats whisker accounting for the fish taken

Not surprising we’ve had few rods as we are currently recommending they visit one of our other larger waters Foremark, Draycote & Eyebrook

Clarity has improved with little sign of algae although with the level well down it doesn’t take much of a wind to stir the soft silt.

Our record indicate over 4,000 trout in the reservoir, we would expect with the cooler evenings & a much cooler forecast this coming week to start seeing catches improve

Fishing reports are getting a bit repetitive, I for one won’t be disappointed to see the back of this hot weather, toughest conditions I’ve seen for managing trout fisheries.

Were fortunate to have 3 other fisheries Draycote, Foremark & Eyebrook, we can see which one is fishing the best and recommend to our customers.

Thornton is now down 7ft in preparation for the engineering work STW need to carry out on the overflow & slipway.

Our water temperature has jumped again this week with a return to the hot weather following a brief respite last weekend.

The few rods who have fished have generally followed our advice and fished the morning session, but its been hard with the rod average 0.5

Another tough week due to the relentless hot weather. Towards the end of the week Friday & Saturday we were given a glimmer of an improvement with slightly cooler daytime temperatures bit more cloud & cooler evenings resulting in our water temperature at 7.30am in the morning registering 18c – 19c before climbing during the day and by 6.00pm registering 20c

With the water at 18c+ in the morning & some cloud we could see fish moving especially over the deeper water by green bay & the stones.

Mick Cross caught 4 for his short morning visit with Micks fish found to be feeding on tiny snails

Mark Hunt followed our advice and fished the cooler morning session, Mark fished an intermediate with cruncher & damsel pattern to catch 6 for his visit from the green bay & stones area.

The booby & snake patterns fished on sinking lines continue to catch a few fish

Not surprising we had very few rods out for the week with the rod average 0.9

The weather this week is giving a slight improvement which should see our surface water temperature at around 18c for the morning session but is likely to climb during the day.

We recommend you concentrate your fishing to the cooler morning session

Severn Trent have some engineering work to carry out on the spillway, for this reason they are dropping the level of the reservoir by 6ft

We have some algae in the water, visibility is around 2ft

From our records you have to go back to 1995 to find similar conditions, with high daytime temperatures leading to high water temperatures. The only saviour has been a fresh breeze nearly every day, without that it could be a lot worse than it is.

Not surprising rod numbers fishing are low, only 20 rods fished last week, the majority followed our advice and fished the cooler morning session

Fast sinking lines RIO S7 or S8 or the Airflo DI8 or Booby Basher were the lines to put on with booby or blob on a short 6ft leader or the Snake patterns which have worked well across our waters this past week.

Unsurprisingly the deeper water in the main basin is the only area to concentrate your efforts

There are signs that the weather will start to change from the middle of next week, let’s hope so.

Difficult week at Thornton with our surface water temperature 20+ degrees all week.

Not surprising therefore that the morning session has fished best with anglers concentrating their efforts over the deeper water with boobies, blobs & snakes

Keith Cawley during his visit opted for a fast intermediate and various lure patterns to catch his 5 trout. Richard Dayman won the Thornton Fly Fishers boat competition with 4 trout with Martin Vernon second with 3 trout

Overall were experiencing the type of fishing conditions we would usually associate with mid July,

The water level is down around 5ft currently as STW have some work to do on the spillway, our water clarity has a slight algae bloom.

The fresh northerly wind during the early part of the week certainly helped to counteract the warming surface temperatures with trout been caught in the top 5ft with some still being taken on dries.

As you would expect with us arriving at the longest day with a good 17hr of daylight the majority of the fishing is been concentrated over the deeper water, the channels at the entrance to both arms, stones, green bay and out in front of the main dam

Monday Keith Cowen caught 5 on blobs, Tuesday Peter Wrigley used the fresh breeze on Tuesday to catch 6 on dries for his mornings visit, Greg Weatherdon followed our advice fished the morning session and caught 5 trout on a fast sinking line and booby. Mark Hunt watched the weather and fished the much cooler evening session om Thursday catching 3 on dries

By Friday the heat of the day was taking its toll with the majority of rods struggling to catch, Liz Astill caught 5 trout during her two visits.

Saturday and the heat of the day continued to have its impact Martin Clay caught 5 for his visit, Mark Hunt struggled to find fish during the morning, although with a freshening breeze & increasing cloud cover found a pod of fish feeding on the surface & caught 14 on a big red cdc combo, he didn’t catch his first fish until 13.45 and was off the water by 16.30

Sunday with a flat calm & bright hot conditions it proved to be a struggle, Phill Mee took advantage of the cooler mornings water temperature taking 3 trout early on a DI3

It was another week of planning your fishing around the weather, generally the mornings fished best although on any days when it remained overcast with a cooler breeze we did have an evening rise although the rise was generally during the last 45min, it’s the time of year to fish through to dark.

Monday Bob Menhams fished a slow sink line off the corner of the wood and recorded 4 trout for his 4 hour mornings visit using damsel & buzzers. Tuesday Norman Perkins use DI3 to catch his 10 trout fishing the mouth of the Thornton arm, Brian Cox & Keith Harkness fished damsel & buzzers to record their tally of 6 fish for their mornings visit.

Mick Glover caught 14 for his mornings visit with a DI3 & orange Fab taking the majority. Thursday evening & unsure of there being an evening rise & fishing 6pm to 9pm Thornton Fly Fishers fished their dry fly match with Martin Vernon catching his two fish limit & winning the match by 7.15pm!

Regular Friday rod Chris Sayer caught 10 for his visit, the same day as retired footballer Paul Gascoigne visited the reservoir to try his luck. Brian Sibley fished the evening rise with his partner Alison showing him the way catching 3 trout to Brian 1

Saturday & Mark Hunt found the pin fry feeders & once he got them sorted caught 10 trout. Mr Mansell visited Thornton on Sunday taking his 4 trout on nymphs fished on a floater

Currently the mornings are fishing best, the evening rise if it occurs will be between 21.15 – 22.00pm

Lots of damsel, sedge, tiny buzzers & caenis on the water, not too much pin fry with any pin fry generally off the stones & green bay area

The water level is down around 3ft – 4ft currently as STW have some work to do on the spillway, our water clarity is good

The weather and water temperature has a massive impact on our sport, with this past week being a topsy turvy week with the surface water temperature ranging from 19c to 21c

It was a case of watching the weather and keeping in touch with the lodge especially if you wanted to fish the evening.

Tuesday evening following a cooler day Peter Wurm & Mark Hunt opted to fish the last 4 hr, both reported seeing good numbers of fish moving, if a little difficult to tempt, with Peter landing 4 and Mark who fished the last 2hr landing 2 trout on edge patterns, both commented that the majority of the fish moved during the last hour 8.45pm -9.45pm

Andy Lillie made the most of the cooler morning conditions catching 14 trout with all of the fish caught on a fast sinking over the deeper water.

Paul Martindale & Phill Mee shared a boat on Saturday morning catching 11 trout, Mick Huffer also fished Saturday morning catching 7 on damsel and buzzers, Steve Meachem caught 5 with Brian Sibley & Alison catching 8, Mark Hunt went after the pin fry feeders and caught 10.

Algae and warm water temperature did not help this past week with our surface temperature by Sunday hitting 20c degrees

Not surprising therefore that our rod average was 1.1 with the morning session fishing best

The deeper water produced with the channel down the Markfield arm, stones, green bay an main car park the areas that produced with the majority of fish falling to sinking lines with snakes, bunny leech or booby.

Kev Mailie and Pete Harris caught 8 between them on Saturday, with P Mee fishing the cooler morning session on Saturday and Sunday to boat 9 trout, Chris Sayer and M Cross fished the morning session on Friday and caught 5 trout

This morning Monday 4^th June and it’s a much cooler forecast with our algae bloom has gone, we have good clarity, with a cooler overcast forecast for the coming week we should see the water cool and an improvement to the sport, with the cooler forecast further stocking will take place this week.

Its turning into a fishing season dominated by the weather, this week we had good weather, windy weather stormy weather with the bright conditions helping to produce an algae bloom, overall a difficult week with our rod average 1.6

Generally last week the morning session produced best.

Monday morning Bob Menhams caught 7 on black buzzer, Mick Jay recorded 5 during his morning session with Adrian Freer during his mornings fishing catching 4 trout including a brown of 4lb+, Rodger Guise also caught 4 for his mornings fishing.

Tuesday morning and the algae was starting to build, Peter Wrigley caught 8 on buzzers with Nev Welsh fishing a damsel to take his 5 trout, John Simpson fished the afternoon session enjoying continued success with his bunny patterns recording 6 trout.

Wednesday and the algae bloom had started to impact on the fishing, the cooler mornings fished best, with Thursday and Friday strengthening north easterly winds and rain certainly not helping.

Saturday morning Brian Sibley was one of the few anglers to master the conditions catching 7 trout for his mornings visit while his boat partner Martin Clay caught 3, conditions didn’t improve much better for Sunday morning with Thornton Fly fishers morning competition won by Martin Vernon with 3 trout.

The deeper water in front of the stones, green bay and dam continues to be the area producing a few fish, we need cooler weather and for the algae to clear.
